Users [reported](https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026/10/ray-ban-meta-smart-glasses-found-recording-audio-without-wearers-consent/) a bug in their Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses that was causing them to record their conversations without their permission, even when the setting to record without using the trigger phrase "Hey, Meta."

Users on [Reddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/MetaGlasses/comments/1x4o2dm/comment/pgfb0l2/?solution=ae883535335bd3e3ae883535335bd3e3&js%5Fchallenge=1&jsc%5Ftoken=2824be10929bdc604753c70a67a1c331ae10be2319c3fac50a101ef009ded647&jsc%5Forig%5Fr=&utm%5Fsource=share&utm%5Fmedium=web3x&utm%5Fname=web3xcss&utm%5Fterm=1&utm%5Fcontent=share%5Fbutton) posted about their smart glasses triggering automatically and recording audio without their permission. Some reports stated it was happening with multiple pairs and multiple times per day.

Transcripts of their conversations were being saved in their conversation history.

Meta [says](https://www.meta.com/help/ai-glasses/1781384439575979/) "Meta AI on your AI glasses may remember details from your conversations so that Meta AI can give you more personalized responses."

Meta announced in September that they would be bringing their "Private Processing," their implementation of [confidential computing](https://confidentialcomputing.io), to Meta AI glasses to prevent anyone but you from being able to access your interactions, but it hasn't been rolled out yet as far as I can tell.

Meta told [Android Authority](https://www.androidauthority.com/ray-ban-meta-glasses-listening-3722586/) in response to the reports:

> This issue has been resolved. People can manage, review and delete voice logs of their interactions with Meta AI via settings at any time.

The glasses have had their fair share of controversy already.

Early on, it was discovered that they were sending video and audio [recordings](https://www.privacyguides.org/news/2026/03/03/meta-smart-glasses-sending-sensitive-recordings-to-workers-to-annotate/) off to workers for training purposes, including videos of people having sex or sensitive documents.

Creeps started using the glasses as a covert recording device to film people in public without their knowledge. There is a light that's meant to notify others when the glasses are recording, as Meta [states](https://about.fb.com/news/2026/07/metas-ai-glasses-your-questions-answered/):

> There’s a light on the front of every pair of our AI glasses that we call a capture LED. Whenever content is being captured for your gallery, this white light blinks to let people know you’re capturing content. For a photo, it blinks briefly, while for a video, it continues to blink for as long as you arerecording. The capture LED has no off switch.

People figured out how to tamper with or block the light in order to continue recording surreptitiously. Meta updated their glasses to try and prevent this type of tampering:

> **Can’t people just cover up or disable the LED?**

> The camera is disabled when people try to do this. Beginning with our second generation of glasses, the camera is automatically disabled if we detect that the capture LED has been blocked. No photos or videos can be taken until we detect that the light is unblocked.
